19th May: Cup Finals!
What a weekend!!
Clonee United F.C. certainly made their mark at the home of the NDSL this weekend,
The first match saw our Under 9D's meet Malahide Utd in the AUTO GLASS SHIELD.
It was a hard fought game, with the teams being an equal match against each other. It was Malahide that had that little bit of extra luck on their side on the day & took the title with a 1-0 lead against our little troopers. A credit to managers Ciaran Scully & Paul Crowley, the
Under 9 D's can hold their heads high having played a tough game fairly & with pride.
Clonee Uniteds' second encounter on Saturday was against Woodlawn in the
MURIEL MC CRORY CUP. From the off, both teams played fast flowing end to end football. In the first half Clonee Utd looked the sharper outfit in open play, but Woodlawn were very dangerous from set pieces. Clonee opened up a 2-0 advantage with goals from Sean Whelan and captain Ciaran O'Sullivan but on the stroke of half time Woodlawn were given a lifeline with a penalty awarded for handball. The Clonee keeper Pierce Mulholland smothered a strong shot and the half time whistle went to great applause from all in attendance. Woodlawn emerged in the second half with a different attitude and immediately put Clonee under pressure. A few missed chances were followed by Woodlawns first goal to put them back in the game. Then more pressure was punctured by fine counter attacking by Clonee which led to Sean Whelan, a thorn in the Woodlawn side all game. score with a long range effort to give Clonee back their 2 goal advantage. Woodlawn came back again even stronger and deservedly got another goal back before the turning point of the game came. A great last ditch block by Clonee defender Barry Coughlan stopped Woodlawn equalising and from there Clonee wrapped up the cup when Patrick Cawley who had gone close a number of times floated a beautiful effort over the despairing Woodlawn keeper. At the final whistle there were joyous scenes but congratulations to both teams for serving up a feast of football to do more than justice to a great day out for everyone.
An early start on Sunday morning brought us back out to the Oscar Traynor grounds to see Clonee's Under 11 D side fight it out against Maynooth Town in the TOM COUGHLAN LEAGUE CUP - and what a game it was!! With Maynooth being from the higher "B" league and a pitch that looked dauntingly huge it was never going to be an easy game. But full of enthusiasm & having just won their league, Clonee's under 11's were eager for more success and charged on.
Clonee took control in the first half with some super touches on midfield, obviously pre-warned Maynooths defence were all over Sean Noble making sure not to give any opportunities away.
Half time came & went with no score. With legs starting to tire & frustration starting to creep in it has to be said Maynooth took over the second half & dominated the pitch. Taking any chance that was given to them they certainly gave Clonee's keeper Andrei Battog a workout to remember - throwing himself in front of anything that came his way, he held his own & made at least four magnificent saves. With neither side conceding, the full time whistle came with still no score!
You'd have thought 10 minutes (each way) extra time should have sorted it out! With Maynooth putting on even more pressure & not giving an inch there were some tricky moments in extra time when Clonee's hopes of Cup glory could easily have been dashed. But with some fine defending by Kristian Coney McDonnell, John Hendrick & their pals Clonee kept their head & stayed focused.
Extra time over - now nobody wants to go out of a Cup this way but it seemed the only way to settle this battle was a penalty shoot out! Or so you'd think................ not a chance!
These two teams so equally matched on the day, it was tit for tat - both sides put 3 in the net & missed 2 leaving it still even stevens - bringing us to a SUDDEN DEATH situation!! The first team to score - we could have been there for the day, Maynooth put up some fight - but Clonee United's Jamie Cussen wrapped it up & got us back home in time for lunch. What a match - what a win, one that most definately will go down in the Clonee Uniteds history books.
The Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the Management at the NDSL, our Managers Ciaran Sculy & Paul Crowley, Paul Cullen & Jerry O'Sullivan, John Bassi & John Hendrick Snr. for the commitment, energy & passion for football they share with their teams.
A final & massive thank you to Fiore, Paul & the staff at Casa Nostra Italian Restaurant in Clonee. Already a loyal & generous sponsor, Casa Nostra out did themselves on both Saturday & Sunday by having all the teams back for the celebrations. A great day was had by all, our club & teams a credit to all involved - well done!
